In a place torn by war, what little pleasures to be had are had without fear. Defiant of the rigours that culture and politics dictate, Pakistan Fashion Week got under way on Wednesday in its most daring outing yet. Held in the main city of Karachi, Pakistan’s top designers gather fearless of the violence on their doorsteps. Some dressess showed bare skin, and though not considered by mainstream fashion to be unconventional, outfits such as this could have serious consequences for the designers involved. However these designers remain defiant in the face of adversity, creating beautifully constructed pieces that have an almost ethereal feel to them. The event evokes an almost ’show must go on’ vibe. One designer, a former student of Bristol University said of the decision to stage the show, “Life must go on… And this is a way to tell the people who want our lives to stop that ‘No, we won’t let you.”
